Better Your Skin on a Budget

14 March 2011 2 Comments

Sarah Helfgott, a self-proclaimed “product junkie”, knows what it means to live on a budget and not let your skin routine suffer because of it. Here she shares a quick and easy DIY face mask.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the time (or the funds) to go to the spa and get a much-needed facial. Oh, how I long for a few minutes with a pore-opening steam machine, or a deep-cleansing treatment, or a temple massage.

But at this point in my life, it’s time to face the facts. Bettering my skin needs to be done on a budget. In other words, I need to be my own Betterist right now.

Whether you have normal, oily, dry, or combination skin, I promise that there is a home remedy out there that will give your esthetician a run for her money (and you can save yours!).

I decided to cook up a facemask for “all skin types” that you can easily recreate in your own kitchen. The best part? It’s made from only two ingredients that you probably already own: Full-fat plain (not flavored!) yogurt and honey! Both of which are really good for your skin.

The yogurt adds enzymes and oil to the skin, acting as a natural moisturizer. It’s also rich in zinc, which can help clear up acne, reduce your pore size, improve your skin’s texture, and give your skin a healthy glow.

Honey also acts as a moisturizer, helping to keep skin hydrated and fresh and prevent drying. It has natural antioxidants that help protect your skin from damage and support your skin’s ability to rejuvenate itself.

The goal of this mask is to moisturize and sooth your tired, over-worked skin.

Ingredients:

1 tbs Plain Yogurt (full-fat!)

1 tbs Honey

Step 1: Pour 1 tbs yogurt in a bowl. Let it sit for 30 minutes until it becomes room temperature.

Step 2: Add 1 tbs of honey and mix your ingredients together.

Step 3: Apply generously all over your face, avoiding your eyes and hair.

Step 4: Let it sit on your face for 10-15 minutes. During this time, feel free to apply some lip balm to soften your lips while you soften your skin (optional!) and lay on your bed with cucumber slices over your eyes (also optional!). Do whatever you want to make your experience more spa-like!

Step 5: Wipe your face clean with a warm, wet washcloth. Liberally apply moisturizer afterwards.

Enjoy your newly smooth, rejuvenated, and buttery-soft face!
